The First South Carolina Volunteers was the darling of Northern imagination. Grant finally lost patience with Jubal Early, particularly his burning of Chambersburg, and knew that Washington remained vulnerable if Early was still on the loose. Several Washington Jews owned slaves in the District. The law, a huge victory for the temperance movement, encouraged other states in the North to pass similar prohibitory laws.
