There weren’t specific writers whom one would think of as pioneers, as were Edgar Allan Poe, Guy de Maupassant and Gogol in the West. Translation played a major role in gaining the interest of Arab writers in Egypt and Greater Syria in modern narrative and dramatic styles. The art of story writing evolved gradually and in the context of the reformists’ rhetoric which called for progress, advancement and modernisation. In general terms, it was the rhetoric of “journalism” which propagated various new forms, styles and ideas.
