By Charles Darwin

Whilst HMS Beagle sailed out of Devonport on 27 December 1831, Charles Darwin was once twenty-two and environment off at the voyage of an entire life. His magazine, right here reprinted in a shortened shape, indicates a naturalist making sufferer observations bearing on geology, usual historical past, humans, locations and occasions. Volcanoes within the Galapagos, the Gossamer spider of Patagonia and the Australasian coral reefs - all are to be present in those impressive writings. The insights made the following have been to set in movement the highbrow currents that resulted in the main arguable booklet of the "Victorian age: The beginning of Species".

On the evening of the 23rd we arrived at Rio, having finished our pleasant little excursion. During the remainder of my stay at Rio, I resided in a cottage at Botofogo Bay. It was impossible to wish for anything more delightful than thus to spend some weeks in so magnificent a country. In England 32 Charles Darwin any person fond of natural history enjoys in his walks a great advantage, by always having something to attract his attention; but in these fertile climates, teeming with life, the attractions are so numerous, that he is scarcely able to walk at all.

If their surprise was great, mine was greater, to find such ignorance among people who possessed their thousands of cattle, and “estancias” of great extent. It can only be accounted for by the circumstance that this retired part of the country is seldom visited by foreigners. I was asked whether the earth or sun moved; whether it was hotter or colder to the north; where 48 Charles Darwin Spain was, and many other such questions. The greater number of the inhabitants had an indistinct idea that England, London, and North America, were different names for the same place; but the better informed well knew that London and North America were separate countries close together, and that England was a large town in London!

A few hedges, made of cacti and agave, mark out where some wheat or Indian corn has been Maldonado is situated on the northern bank of the Plata, and not very far from the mouth of the estuary. It is a most quiet, forlorn, little town; built, as is universally the case in these countries, with the streets running at right angles to each other, and having in the middle a large plaza or square, which, from its size, renders the scantiness of the population more evident. It possesses scarcely any trade; the exports being confined to a few hides and living cattle.
