His prose is no longer transparent, nor does he want it to be. It was the style of By Love Possessed that Dwight Macdonald attacked most vehemently. He was not wrong all of the time, for a few of the sentences he quotes are awkwardly put together or unnecessarily involved, but much that he condemns is, in context, perfectly sound, and he ignores the many bold experiments in the use of language that prove successful. On the whole, I prefer the style of Guard of Honor to that of By Love Possessed, but the latter has virtues that should not be overlooked.

In By Love Possessed, on the other hand, we enter no consciousness but Arthur Winner's, and Cozzens' success in telling so complicated a story from a single point of view might have won Henry James's admiration.
