By Wilson C. Chin

This can be the single e-book explaining glossy MWD know-how, to incorporate layout, sign processing and telemetry, delivering exact ways to high-data-rate good logging. exchange magazines and assessment articles describe MWD in informal phrases, comparable to optimistic as opposed to adverse pulsers, non-stop wave structures, drilling channel noise, and attenuation, usually without technical rigor. in spite of the fact that, few actually clinical discussions can be found on latest tools, not to mention the advances important for high-data-rate telemetry. with out a powerful starting place development on reliable acoustic rules, rigorous arithmetic, and naturally, quick, reasonably cheap and effective trying out of mechanical designs, low facts premiums will impose unacceptable caliber matters to real-time formation evaluate for years yet to come. This ebook delivers to alter all of this. The lead writer and M.I.T. trained scientist, Wilson Chin, and Yinao Su, academician, chinese language Academy of Engineering, and different workforce participants have written the one publication to be had that develops dust pulse telemetry from first ideas, adapting sound acoustic ideas to rigorous sign processing and effective wind tunnel checking out. in truth, the tools and telemetry ideas built within the publication have been lately followed by means of one of many global s greatest business enterprises in its challenge to redefine the face of MWD. the complete engineering background for non-stop wave telemetry is roofed anecdotal tales and their fallacies, unique difficulties and their options, varied noise mechanisms and their sign processing strategies, obvious paradoxes encountered in box assessments and straightforward motives to advanced questions, etc, are mentioned in whole inform all aspect for college students, examine professors, engineers alike. those contain sign processing algorithms, sign enhancement tools, and hugely effective brief and lengthy wind tunnel try out tools, whose effects may be dynamically re-scaled to actual muds flowing at any velocity. A must-read for all petroleum engineering pros! within this groundbreaking new quantity, readers will locate: a proof of dust pulse know-how basically utilizing clinical ideas principles displaying boundaries of current platforms and the way they are often conquer; cutting edge equipment for sign improvements wanted for extraordinarily deep wells confident wave interference, sirens in sequence, exact diversifications of frequency-shift-keying, and others; a blueprint for high-data-rate dust pulse telemetry followed by means of numerous of the world's most sensible strength enterprises, defined in simple-to-understand phrases, from first rules and rigorous physics to complicated mathematical innovations for sign processing, noise removing and echo cancellation; and, new wind brief and lengthy tunnel designs and try methodologies for dust sirens and generators from Wilson Chin, the originator of wind tunnel modeling for downhole functions.

4a. Early 1980s “stable closed’ siren (left) and improved 1990s “stable-opened” downstream rotor design. While apparently simple in design, unanticipated flow effects are to be found. The upstream rotor design used in early designs produces numerous operational hazards, the least of them being stoppage of data transmission. When rock debris or sudden jarring occurs, the rotor is known to stop at a closed azimuthal position that completely blocks mud flow. This results in severe tool erosion, extremely high pressures that affect well control, not to mention surface safety issues associated with high pressure buildup at the mudpump.

Thus, wind flow rate measurements must be carefully calibrated. Fortunately, experimental data can be easily checked for physical consistency. For instance, suppose torque data for a siren or turbine configuration are available at two speeds U, say Ta and Tb for Ua and Ub. Since torque is known to vary quadratically with oncoming speed, these measurements must satisfy (Ta/Tb) = (Ua/Ub)2 – if not, either the calibration procedure or the torque measurement itself is incorrect, or both. A separate density ratio correction, of course, applies to both torque and power.

Comments: In the top photographs, a short plastic section is tapped for close transducer placements needed for “very, very high” data rates characterized by very short wavelengths. In the lower figure, a similar configuration is used in the long acoustic wind tunnel. 1. Chinese fireworks. 2. Artificial low frequency “mud pump” noise. Comments: During one test session, a vendor failed to deliver our “mud pump emulator” on time. Improvising was key to obtaining qualitative data. Chinese firecrackers will produce strong plane waves at approximately once per second.
