From 1971 to 1974, Wesleyan affiliated several outstanding instructors, including Sam Rivers, Jimmy Garrison, Ed Blackwell, and Charles Garner, with trumpeter Clifford Thornton on the faculty during that period. In 1975, Bill Barron arrived as professor. He started the Wesleyan Jazz Orchestra and taught until his death in 1989. Daoud Haroon was artist in residence in the mid-1970s, followed by Dick Griffith and later Bill Lowe, who came around 1980 and stayed until 1990. Anthony Braxton came in 1991.
