Having said that, this work does not draw on any perspectives from within the firm, and indeed the VoC literature shares the same weak point. The VoC literature that is based on embeddedness, path-dependence and complementarity has not really considered the role of agency. Mostly it takes a cognitive perspective,93 which is insufficient to explain how and why organizations change or do not change. VoC theory depends strongly on idealtypical models which do not pay attention to the various diversified actions of agency behind the model.
The debate on continuity and change is a fruitful way of understanding how and why Japanese firms seem to be increasingly developing US forms of corporate messages, while remaining sensitive to questions of whether or not these US-style management approaches are being practically implemented within Japanese organizations. Corporate narrative management is a new research area in Japan, and therefore we need more empirical data. A multicase study with an interview-based design provides a closer understanding of the structure of the dynamics of the Japanese style of narrative management.
