Margaret Isabella Balfour (1829-97), daughter of the Reverend Dr Lewis Balfour (1777-186O), minister of Colinton, was, like her husband, one of 13 children, and grew up with her brothers, sisters and many cousins in the manse on the Water of Leith outside Edinburgh. Lively, spirited, outgoing, she was the ideal partner for Thomas Stevenson (1818-87), the engineer whom she married in 1848. Louis was their only child and pride of their lives. Inheriting a weak chest from her own father, she suffered ill health during Louis's infancy, and much of his nursery care was undertaken by the adored Alison Cunningham, his 'second mother'.
