Despite the greater public presence of homosexuality, researchers suggest that self-identified non-heterosexuals form a tiny percentage of a given population (Wellings et al. 1994). There is still a surprisingly high degree of stability in family relationships, even if, as we argue, the form is changing (McRae 1999). The inevitable question, therefore, is where is the problem? And why is there such anguish? Perhaps, as Silva and Smart (1999b:3–4) suggest, what is in decline really is the normative force of marriage as the underpinning of family life, and this ‘ideological slippage’ is in fact what much of the political rhetoric is about.
Through the phrasing, the assertions and hesitations, we gain genuine insights into the ways in which perceived experience is expressed. But, Plummer argues, there is a third and more effective way of analysing the account, which partly builds on the last point, but goes further: to take the narratives seriously in their own right, not as historical truth (though historical truths do become apparent through them) but as narrative truth. Hence, it is possible to conceptualise the stories of nonheterosexual relationships in the following way: not so much as demonstrating final truths, but rather, as a way of understanding the consequences of telling a particular story, in a particular way, under specific circumstances.
