But not all Democrats were as high-minded as the Ervins. In the heated political culture of the 1890s, the Democrats castigated the Republicans as vindictive carpetbaggers, traitorous scallywags, and ignorant Negroes. Since Burke County had a significant number of Republicans, many of them freedmen, local Democrats thought nothing of corrupting the process just a bit to ensure that proper southerners stayed in power. One infamous ex-Confederate Democrat named Captain Joe Mills controlled the voting box in a section of Burke County known as Brindletown.
