What has become clear over the past seventeen years is that Cubans are not bound to political binary oppositions that respond to struggles played out between Cuba and the United States or that are built upon nostalgic memories of an idyllic pre-Castro past. Cubans live in many countries, have different and changing political views, and write literature that reflects these forceful international cultural experiences.

Berg emphasizes that they tend to “not nationalize their memories” (24); instead, they remember their Cuba in terms of friends and family.
